KaBOOM! Community Playground Coming Soon...
KaBOOM playgroundChildren in the Winston Lake Family YMCA area are in need of a playground, and on Saturday, June 20, more than 200 community volunteers will come together to make this dream a reality. KaBOOM! is a national non-profit organization that empowers communities to come together and build playgrounds. Their goal is to mobilize 200 volunteers and build a playground in one day that will serve as a gathering place for the community. The community will come together on June 20th to build a playground that will enhance a strong YMCA. Special thanks to Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina for being our funding partner. Please contact Bridgett Loftin or call (336) 724-9205 if you would like to volunteer.

Black Achievers Gala
On Friday May 8th, the Black Achievers in Industry and Business Awards Gala was held at the Benton Convention Center. The Black Achievers program targets middle and high school students, with a focus on creating effective and influential interaction between the youth and their adult role models. The goal is for the Achievers to be inspired to seek higher education and develop their career goals. The Gala is an annual celebration highlighting accomplishments over the past year and awarding scholarships to deserving youth. This year $14,000 in scholarships were awarded to the following students: Freddie Alford, Blake Coleman, Quentin Davis, Gabrielle Ellis, Chelsea Gwyn, Derek Lineberger, Laritia Mitchell, Thomas J. McEachin, Wesley Moses, Richelle Pugh and Darren Roseboro.

Prayer Breakfast
The Winston Lake Family YMCA held its annual Prayer Breakfast in honor of the National Day of Prayer on the morning of May 7th. The theme was "Prayer... America's Hope," based on Psalms 33:22: "May your unfailing love rest upon us, O Lord, even as we put our hope in you." Approximately 70 were in attendance, benefiting from excellent fellowship, food and special talk by Reverend Darryl Aaron, Pastor of First Baptist Church.

Y Splash Teaches Water Safety to Local Children
Did you know that nearly 60% of minority children don't know how to swim? Winston Lake Family YMCA partnered with Winston-Salem State University's Maya Angelou Institute for Improvement of Child and Family Education to offer Y Splash, free water safety and basic swim instruction, to 60 students at Petree Elementary School. The children had a great time in the pool and learned important safety lessons. Remember - it's never too late to learn how to swim. The YMCA offers water safety and swim lessons to children and adults. Find out more.
